I got asked to be interviewed on a national news show today about the Redskins trademark issue. I declined by telling them they should interview a woman who has been crucial in the movement to eradicate Indian mascots. I made that decision for two reasons: - My recommended person for this interview is far more active on the issue. And her experience goes beyond any qualifications needed to provide a quick 4 minute commentary. - And two. We need to diversify the voices of Indian Country in mainstream news media. Native people have been getting a lot of media attention this past year. Which im excited for. However I would like to see more native women leaders highlighted on TV. Especially since many of our movements and struggles are being lead by women. Anyways, it was a simple request. So long story short. .. they tried calling her, but didnt get an answer (which was a major bummer since she missed the call by 30 seconds)...so they turned to the third string.... and picked another Native man to be on the show. Haha. Curses. #Fail I got teased by my friends for turning down the interview. But we have to not be afraid to challenge media outlets to be more balanced in its guests.
