I got two tickets in November from the Dyer police. 1) Expired plates 2) Driving on a suspended license. I honestly and truthfully did not know my plates were expired - long story. My drivers license was suspended because after I was rear-ended and called my insurance company to let them know, they did not report to the state of Indiana that I was an insured driver - remember, the accident was NOT my fault - so the state of Indiana suspended my license. After I was pulled over in November, my car was towed and impounded. I immediately - that evening - went to the Dyer police station and paid my $75 fee to get the release to get my car. The next day John and I spent AN ENTIRE day (had to take the day off work) jumping through all kinds of hoops getting my car out of impound, getting it emissions tested, getting it plated, and getting my license reinstated. At the end of December I received the post card notifying me of my 4:00 court date today. Today I had to leave work two hours early to show up at the Lake County Courthouse. When I arrived I waited in line with an unbelievable number of people to get into the courtroom. I was asked if I now had a current plates and a reinstated license - which I do - and was handed my official court file/envelope and told to go to the front of the courtroom and to lay my envelope with the proof that I had paid the price for my traffic sins and had indeed made them whole again on the ledge. So, I followed 30% of the rest of the people there and did what I was told. The gentleman at the front of the room saw what I had presented to him and said with all of the enthusiasm of a teenage boy in JC Penneys shopping for slacks with his mother that he was going to dismiss the charges and told me to wait for my name to be called. So I did. Meanwhile we were told that nothing was going to start until everyone slid in and made room for more people to sit on the benches. So we complied...kind of. The man next to me needed a bath - BAD. 15 minutes later we rose as the judge entered. Then we sat....... Until o n e b y o n e the very warm and friendly female judge who seemed genuinely pleased to have us all in her courtroom read The State of Indiana vs [Tina Gibson] (at which point I was instructed to stand) and the gentleman said something like The State motions that the charges be dropped. at which point the judge responded something like The charges are dropped. You may leave. What a COMPLETE WASTE of time and money. I paid nothing. I dont have to go 6 months without a ticket. Nothing. Dont get me wrong, Im glad Im not paying any court or ticket fees. But the money wasted on the whole process at the Lake County Courthouse...unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable. That is all.
