I graduated in 1982. Long before cell phones, the internet and 300 tv channels. Education was simple, pencil, paper, chalkboards and the trips outside to dust the erasers for the teacher. Overhead projectors were the most modern thing in the classroom. There was the occasional VCR in some classes. We werent allowed calculators, thats what pencils and paper were for. What good is teaching math if you cant figure out the equation or problem with pen and paper and using your brain? So many young people are accustomed to electronics that simple addition. subtraction, multiplication and division bumfuzzle the fool out of them. Ever go to a store and watch the cashier get confused if they hit the wrong button and have to grab a cell phone calculator to see how much change you get back? Sentence structure was taught in elementary school. We diagrammed sentences to understand how to effectively build a proper sentence. Kids today are extremely more advantaged than when I went to school. The technology is overwhelmingly more available, making life simpler. But do the changes in educational teachings make a difference? Can they walk in a store and choose items to purchase and keep track of the amount in their head? Can they budget their needs against their wants? Calculators are a great tool. But nothing beats a fully charged human brain.
