I had a bit of an epiphany yesterday. I was talking to someone new to the sport, trying to explain how we judges make our choices and/or give out scores. It occurred to me that Im looking for a good employee. I want a dog who comes to work to do a job. Doesnt hang around the water cooler visiting, doesnt stir up trouble, doesnt disappear so that Ive got no idea if hes working or not, changes tasks and takes direction as needed, does what I want done, not what he or she wants to do, etc. The dog does not have to be a total Type A worker. A reliable and ambitious dog will also get the job done. If you cant visualize your dog as an employee, think of how you would feel about him/her if he/she was your co-worker.
