I had an uninterrupted shower this morning and revelled in the peace and quiet without remembering the general outcomes when a toddler is quiet for a long time. I came into the lounge room to discover half the floor covered in chicken feed! I have been really sick and my patience was a bit thin and I wanted to chide my little one and get angry about the mess but instead I took a breath and asked her why there were seeds all over the carpet and she explained it was for the chickens, sincerely and sweetly. So we talked about how the chickens dont come inside and how we needed to clean it up off the floor and she suggested we could put it in a box... I suggested that we could do that or use the vacuum cleaner as an alternative... What a good idea mummy! And she proceeded to spend 10 minutes happily vacuuming most of the seeds up. She had such a good time vacuuming the seeds that we might need to talk a bit more about only feeding the chickens outside so she knows the whole scattering-seeds-then-vacuuming activity isnt on our normal list of fun things to do!! I love these opportunities to practise a calm response... So often our kids arent doing things to annoy us and if we can just take that deep breath before taking that stance we have the opportunity to hear whats going on in their heads and resolve the situation with a bit of fun... Happiness all round :-)
