I had to leave Pumpkin at the vets... she is seriously dehydrated - TopicsExpress

I had to leave Pumpkin at the vets... she is seriously dehydrated and as the vet said obviously something more is going on... When she was there 12 days ago he tried a shot of Pepcid and it seemed miraculous because she began to eat (she was a voracious little eater!) and she drank water as she should but in the last 2 days she has hardly eaten a thing and I didnt think she was drinking either and I apparently was right about that... she became lethargic and was no longer playful and just wanted to sleep under the couch. I was getting worried yesterday as it became obvious it was more than just an off day. Im am very glad I didnt wait until Monday and the vet was open on Saturday. I have a bad feeling about this, given her age (17). I am going to be stoic if the news is grave as I suspect it will be; I rescued her in good faith and will be able to say that I gave her a good home for as long as I could and this included good medical care too... but if heroic measures are required and there is no subsequent guarantee that we could extend her life for quite awhile and give her a good quality life, then I will not agree to them. My decision will not be made solely on the basis of cost but I do have to factor money into this at some point and be realistic because Shadow needs to have a cataract removed next month (it is ripe but he still has a wee bit of vision but per the vet to keep it there will risk glaucoma and also cancer of the cornea and both are bad news). Obviously, surgery is not cheap but it will restore his sight in that eye and he is still young enough to make it reasonable to do and remove the risk of complications caused by leaving the cataract on the eye. I know a dog can adapt to one eye but I also see it impairing him b/c he sometimes walks into things on the right side and seems frustrated. So, I feel my first duty is to Shadow and I would of course rescue another cat if I can no longer give Pumpkin a decent comfortable life. Nonetheless I pray I hear good news re: Pumpkin but have a hunch I wont. Damn.
