I have a question for my mortgage originator friends....Why do mortgage companies require flood insurance on a property when the structure is not in the flood zone itself. My insurance peeps tell me it depends on the mortgagee. They can waive that since their interest is only in the structure not the land. If you have nothing but land that is going to flood, that doesnt seem fair to the home owner. If the elevation certificate states no structures are going to flood...why is it required? You are paying money on something that a claim can not be filed or paid....seems weird.
