I have been thinking about social security. Maybe it is because the ideal of retirement is on my mind or simply the state of the way things are right now. I do not really know why?? This is the conclusion that I have come to so far. If a person is to work for our current minimum wage for 30 years and pays into the program at the current rate of 13%, that person will receive a benefit of about $700 a month. I rounded up a little. Now if that same person were to invest that 13% for the same 30 years in a safe investment and only get 5% interest. That person would have the ability to earn about $700 a month in interest income after 30 years. This made me wonder, what is the point of maintaining this system? What benefit is it to people? I just do not get it. I am open to an explanation.
