I have just returned from the National SHRM conference which I attended along with 13,000 other HR professionals from all over the world. The conference was jammed packed with key note speakers and over 200 concurrent sessions and in between SHRM did announce their new certification program and held a town hall meeting. The majority of the information covered at the conference was information already shared by SHRM and the town hall consisted of a presentation of the information already released and did not give an opportunity for questions. I spoke to a number of attendees and overheard a few conversations surrounding the SHRM certification and the consensus seems to be there is still a lot of confusion. I did have the opportunity to attend a couple of session specifically for the Certification Chair and SHRM Learning System Facilitators. Although the information was much the same of what had already been communicated, I was able to gain a little more insight and information. One of SHRMs goals was to create a certification which will be globally recognized and set the platinum standard for HR certification. The SHRM Certification is founded on a nine competency model, The SHRM Body of Competency & Knowledge (BoCK); eight behavioral and one technical. Out of these competencies there are four HR Knowledge Domains (People, Organization, and Strategy & Workplace). Out of these domains the new learning system modules will be created; there will be four of five learning system modules. The learning system is still being finalized with a December 2014 availability date. As with the PHR/SPHR/GPHR there will be eligibility requirements to determine if you are able to sit for the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP). In the fall sample pilot testing groups will be conducted. Based on the results of the testing groups, the pass/fail rates will be set. An aggressive marketing campaign will be conducted to include; Chapter communication, How to make a case for the new certification, ads, direct marketing to businesses, members and education partners. It will be a multi-facet marketing campaign. If you have not done so already, I encourage you to visit shrmcertification.org. Here you will find the most updated information as well as, the nine competencies, the break down of the HR Knowledge Domains, eligibility requirements, FAQ, timeline and additional information. Remember you will not loose your PHR/SPHR/GPHR. HRCI will continue to offer these certification credentials and if you keep your current certification you will have the opportunity to obtain the new SHRM Certification without having to sit for the exam in May of 2015. If you planned to sit for the PHR/SPHR for the upcoming testing window I advocate you continue with your plans. If you pass you will be eligible to have the opportunity obtain your SHRM certification without taking another exam and be able to hold both certifications. As always, NKY SHRM will share with our members any information we receive.
