I have never thought of myself as a journalist. Ive thought of - TopicsExpress

I have never thought of myself as a journalist. Ive thought of myself as a writer who is unintimidated by fame, a damn good one who can carry on a conversation and construct a narrative. Any time I have allowed myself the momentary self-delusion of being a journalist, I have experienced what it is like to feel complexly inferior. Claiming not to be a journalist has always been a kind of defense mechanism on my part. It deflects the criticism of my work before I can be faced with it. Indeed, I am the first to insist that the term celebrity journalism is an oxymoron. This morning I heard that the Columbia Journalism Review is going to review my next book, I Left It on the Mountain, in its March/April edition. They have also asked for a copy of my first book, Mississippi Sissy. My feelings are complex.
