I havent been wildly adventurous with food so far on this trip - TopicsExpress

I havent been wildly adventurous with food so far on this trip because I always worry about the ingredients being halal and I find it difficult to understand everything on the menu. I now take my iPad with me to restaurants and if they have wifi I use Google Translate to figure it all out. I have had a couple of interesting dishes, though. I loved the croquettas I had when I was hopelessly lost in the middle of the mountains one day. They are round fried balls with cheese and fish in them, I think. When I got into Guadalajara after cycling 186km, I ordered something called aroz de cubana. It was rice with a hot tomato sauce poured all over it and a fried egg in the middle if it all. How anyone came up with that combination, I have no idea. But it was perfect grub for me after that crazy long ride. Absolutely perfect. Yesterday in Calatayud I had another strange starter. It was a fish soup, with pieces of fish, tons of chickpeas, and a fried boiled egg in it. It was wonderful. Today I tried a tapas made of a pickled cucumber stuffed with tuna. Lovely! Food is one of my ultimate favorite parts of travel. I love getting to know a culture through what they eat.
