I just found this in the Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois, 1905 edition, edited by among others Newton Bateman, LL. D. [Remember him? Hes the guy that the old Jacksonville HS was named for. In his picture in this book, he looks like a cross between Father Abraham and one of the Smith Brothers!] WAVERLY, a city in Morgan County, 18 miles southeast of Jacksonville, on the Jacksonville & St. Louis and the Chicago, Peoria & St. Louis Railroads. It was originally settled by enterprising emigrants from New England, whose descendants constitute a large proportion of the population. It is the center of a rich agricultural region, has a fine grade school, six or seven churches, two banks, two newspapers, and a tile works. Population (1880), 1,124; (1890), 1,337; (1900), 1,573.
