I just had a conversation with the superintendent which did not go so well. First we spoke about the changes to lockdown and safety procedures in our schools. Apparently homeland security is developing a statewide plan. Again...why are we letting this happen? Each district...each school is different and why are we again giving up local control. I have been pushing for the ALICE program and I am getting a push back. Parents should look into this and do what they can to push it forward. Secondly we discussed the assessments. As you many know Jewett St school had a meeting with Dr. Livingston, teachers and that schools admin. Everyone left all warm and fuzzy. She suggested we do that in other schools to which I responded that I have been around long enough to know that teachers will not come forward in that environment and speak their mind. Teachers are telling parents that these assessments are taking their toll on the children. Parents are seeing the toll and the admin wants to smooth things over with a kumbaya moment. I explained that putting the teachers in a position where they have to choose between risking their jobs and speaking their minds isnt fair and that this administration needs to take stalk in what it hears from the parents. I requested a list of all district assessments that will be required of my children and a copy of those tests. When a multitude of children are having problems, that are new, we need to step back and re-evaluate what we are doing. That is the point where she said we would have to agree to disagree. Parents please be vocal. 1st and 2nd graders should not be in tears over testing. We are setting our kids up for failure. Once we kill the love of learning we have lost the war.
