I just received word that Henry Jones has passed away. There was no greater champion of the Murray Darling than Henry. A fisherman from Goolwa, he became the authentic voice on the impact of poor management on the Lower Lakes and The Coorong. It was Henry Jones who brought a tinny to Canberra and cooked a breakfast of fish on the BBQ outside Parliament House to make sure every member of parliament knew that irrigation jobs werent the only jobs in the Murray Darling. He showed everyone respect and conveyed an integrity and dignity which affected everyone he met. The day I signed the Murray Darling Plan into law the first person I called was Henry Jones. The story of the rivers returning to health belongs to many people, but to no one more than Henry Jones. RIP.
