I like to emphasize to my patients that exercise need not be intense and aerobic to benefit mood. In fact, any type of physical exertion or activity can be beneficial. For example, a 1988 study that compared single sessions of high- and low-intensity exercise found that high-intensity aerobic session led to increases in tension/anxiety and fatigue. On the other hand, the low-intensity exercise led to positive mood changes and an increase in vigor and exhilaration. -Gabriel Cousens, M.D. "Depression-Free for Life"
