I like to watch the news and often switch between American and Canadian news. One thing I noticed about the coverage of the Parliament Hill shooting was how much scarier the American presentation of it was. Despite what you may think about the CBC in general, I admired the focus on accurately depicting the event and controlling panic rather than inciting it. I especially appreciated the subsequent focus on honouring and remembering Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and minimal time allotted to the perpetrator. In the wake of the shooting our usually robotic emotionless Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave an emotional address to the nation honouring both Cpl. Patrice Vincent and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo in which he stated Canada will never be intimidated. As angry and upset as we are as a nation at the events of this week, it is important to remember that these fallen soldiers gave their lives to protect our right to live in what Harper described as a free, democratic, and safe society. If we as Canadians will truly not be intimidated by terrorism we will not descend into the madness that has occurred in the United States over the past decade. We will never use security as a weapon against minorities or an enforcement of a class system. We will never put journalists or citizens who merely disagree with Canadian politicians on terrorist lists. We will not take revenge on Muslims or violate their rights as Canadian citizens. We will not become afraid of our neighbours and draw lines based on race or religion. We will not resort to terrorism ourselves and not allow Canada to become a police state. As we sure up our defenses in the days to come let us never give up our Canadian values in the service of protecting them. Might does not make right, its the opposite: We are always strongest when we are doing the right thing! #Godkeepourland #Canada
