I love the lessons nature teaches and that my boys and I get to share those lessons together. Harrison and I were talking about life and school and some of the things hes struggling with when he reached down and grabbed a rock. Problems are like rocks, some are small....teeny tiny....and some are big and heavy. As we talked about his struggles I had him pick a rock that would represent the size he believed his problem to be. It was interesting to watch him very carefully choose a rock for each situation and to sometimes shake his head and say no, thats a little too big/small for that one, and then choose another in its place. At one point he stated that life would be a lot easier without problems. I asked him to look at the river and tell me what would happen if we took all the rocks away. The water would just run everywhere and get lost and make a mess, he replied. I nodded. We walked down the river a bit to where a rock slide had partially blocked the flow of the water and we observed that the river had changed its course to move around the rocks and continue its flow down the mountain. I pointed out, If all your problems were taken away Heavenly Father couldnt guide you where you need to go and youd be lost. Problems help us change our course and build up the strength and courage to navigate life so we can end up where were meant to be. He reached over and gently squeezed my hand and said thats why youre such a great mom, youve had lots of rocks! Touché my son, touché!
