I love this article. ADHD has to be understood as a modern construct to describe behaviors and responses to what we have constructed as normal. There are so many layers and facets to this -- how we as parents establish and enforce expectations based on the structure of schools, our own anxiety about the future of our children, etc.; how our structures (schools, religions, employment options, etc.) establish normal and reward or punish behavior based on its adherence to normal; the role of chemicals to modify behavior in order to help people achieve normality and the consequences -- both side effects and the loss of diversity -- that come about because of our treatments with chemicals. Lots to think about here. And the money quote: But let’s not rush to medicalize their curiosity, energy and novelty-seeking; in the right environment, these traits are not a disability, and can be a real asset.
