I`m as guilty as anyone about making fun of kids who shirk manual labor, who get the horse handed them by a groom, hand the horse back to the groom, the familiar scenario--- But, it isn`t the fault of the kids, I suspect, but of the parents who let it happen. Those of us who got pushed by our parents are far luckier than those who got a free ride, though at the time I doubt we`d have agreed. Can a child survive the curse of privilege, I wonder. Probably better than the curse of abject poverty, but somewhere in the middle is better for the kid. Make the little bastard work early, and he`ll be more likely to be a worker later--- That, at least, was my father`s prescription, though not phrased quite so bluntly.
