I miss the Public Library on Main St, across from the current Health Department/then Sears. Does anyone have photos of it, both inside and outside? To be able to walk in off the street, either descending into the basement through that lower step down to the door or coming through the elegant front entrance, I always felt I was entering a magical place. The smell of the books, the light filtering through the blinds on those huge windows, the rolling ladders and stepstools, the amazing librarians who NEVER ever told me a question was unanswerable. I felt alive and special every moment I was there. I especially loved summers, when I was allowed to take as many books home on my weekly visit as I could carry. I learned to stack well, largest on the bottom, so that I could haul out quite a load, often taller than my head. I dont know what the limit was, but Im sure we prabably averaged my brother and sisters books in so that my mom and I could bring home more that we would read. It is probably the most special time of my summers in elementary school. I was particularly fond of the statues around the library,. including that beautiful little marble girl who read just outside the exit door in the basement, to the left. I felt that spot must surely have been inhabited by fairies, if only I could sit there long enough to spy them. I remember weeping when I learned they would close down the library to open the new state of the art library in its current location. I love the library still, and always make it a point to find the public library in every place I spend time. There will NEVER be a library like this first library of my heart.
