I post this speech for my thoughtful, reflective Facebook friends. It runs a bit over 26:minutes yet it offers and educational and spiritual experience that cant be purchased at Harvard or Cambridge. For the uninitiated newcomer to America history and politics Dr. Kings speech commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation provides a brilliant discourse that with stands scrutiny of the most rigorous scholarship. Yet such a balanced critic from the oppressed class perspective has seldom if ever been articulated publicly so powerfully. He speaks from his written self-edited text. There is a pause in one section of 10-20 seconds but remarkably it flows easily. To find an excuse not to experience this speech is to find a reason to say history has no relevance and understanding how we arrived where we are doesnt matter.(D.Day 2015) On September 12, 1962, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave a speech at the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York City to honor the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on the eve of its centennial anniversary. At a dinner organized by New Yorks Civil War Centennial Commission, Dr. King spoke on the importance of the Emancipation Proclamation in American history, arguing that the document proved that government could be a powerful force for social justice. He urged Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and President John F. Kennedy to hasten integration and progress towards full civil rights.D.Day 2015
