I read an article in the New york times last night about how the government of New York want to invest $5,000 per inmate in the New York Prison System to provide them with an education. According to the article the Governor put it in his budget and then when he met with backlash immediately took it out. It cost $60,000 per year to house an inmate in a prison so whats another $5000 when it is likely that that inmate if given a decent education has a better chance to not re-offend. This is a Vicious Cycle it seems because the men and women that get out of jail tend to reoffend and go back in. But we as a society want to be tough on the criminals and somehow making a criminal read a book or write a paper, learn how to diagnose a computer network or other tangible skills is doing nothing but making the criminals smarter. I take interest in this because according to the numbers (BY FAR) most of the inmates in prison are Black Men. and What I see is that Black Men who are educated can help this world...But its got to start somewhere. Is it disrespectful to the Victims if this happens?
