I realize many of you ladies many not give a hoot about football. However, I do believe you take a dim view on having a big guy punch a women. I suspect many of you are against anyone punching anyone but that’s another subject. Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you have seen some snippet of the tape of Baltimore Ravens running back, Ray Lewis, punching his then girlfriend, now wife, in the puss. This is none of our damn business. Ray Rice is an asshole for hitting his wife. However, she was not without fault in this incident. But this happened in February for Christ’s sake. He and the women he punched got married and he was put into a program for anger management. I am sick and tired of the sanctimonious busy bodies that populate journalism and the media. Ray Rice did a bad thing, admitted it and was going about the process of trying to deal with the problem. He has the support of his wife. It would be a different matter if she had not married him and was claiming he hit her every day. But that’s not the case. This man has just experienced a media lynching. He may not be dangling from a tree, but the faux outrage has certainly created the possibility that his career in football is over. The one’s that need a punch in the face are the NFL Commissioner, the owner of the Baltimore Ravens, the General Manager of the Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore’s Coach, John Harbaugh. They have known about this for months. If the tape was so goddamn important they could have obtained it months ago. I have done work for the NFL office of security in the past and know for a fact that this capability is in their hands. Instead, all the NFL cares about is managing politics, not doing the right thing. When they first learned of this they should have conducted a full investigation, gathered all the facts and then decided on an appropriate punishment. Any punishment needed to take into account several considerations–did Rice routinely punch women? did Rice demonstrate and uncontrollable temper? was Rice remorseful or unrepentant? The chickenshit move by the Ravens–firing Rice–demonstrates what a despicable group of cowards that organization is. No loyalty whatsoever. No interest in redemption or recovery. Just covering their own ass. Mrs. Rice is out this morning with an initial statement. I suspect as she continues to speak and talk about the unfairness of this public lynching that public support will start swinging back to Ray and the Missus. Can you imagine what might happen to you if you were unwittingly videotaped in the midst of anger? Any of you worthy of throwing the first stone? The NFL is a schizophrenic. The sport is violent. It relies on people hitting other people. It celebrates toughness in taking hits and keep moving forward. In this case, the NFL demonstrated that it cannot take a hit and that it has no honor.
