I reckon league tables have had their day, time to think again - TopicsExpress

I reckon league tables have had their day, time to think again now. As the article says, they create false incentives to push kids into the A-C category, but not to get from B to A, or A to A*. They could partly fix the league tables by a point system that weighted eg A* 8, A 6, B 4, C 3, D 2, E 1 to give an incentive. But any table system will be useless while schools can be selective about who they let in, and what exams they put the students forwards for. You could easily have a school with terrible results because of catchment etc, put a bright kid in, the teachers do a good job, and that kid gets superb results. We need individual teaching, not group teaching. Time needs to be equally divided amongst all students. Currently the brightest get the smallest share of the pie of school resource as they are usually less trouble, and they learn the material quickly. The brightest should also not get more than anyone else though - teaching to the middle leaves a lot of less able students struggling, and if they are conscientious, that must be a bad place for a student to be. I pity the kid who is on the C-D boundary for a subject they hate and struggle with, because the school will pile on the pressure to get a C in it, but it would be better for the kid to drop the subject (or at least reduce its priority) and focus on what they do well and enjoy.
