I sometimes have a bit of a difficult relationship with Doom - TopicsExpress

I sometimes have a bit of a difficult relationship with Doom Metal. While the slow, heavy distortion sound can create a wall of sound that can be epic and inspiring, it is all too often that doom metal sounds awfully like, well, itself - like an endless, slow repeat of drudgery and sameness. It sometimes feels lacking of originality. Like a copy of itself, or more accurately, a copy of the classic Black Sabbath song Black Sabbath. I call this the doom syndrome. Perhaps its because I simply heard too much of that particular type of doom metal. Whatever the case, a part of me is always wary when I start to first listen to an album which I know falls under the genre of doom metal. That is perhaps why Avatariums debut surprised me so much. This little gem of a debut, only out for a couple of days yet, was one I had to at least have a look at. Good words were spoken about it, and the band members are well-known in the scene (Candlemass, Tiamat, Evergrey). That did not prepare me for the heavy psychedelic influence in the album. It did not prepare me for the stellar female vocals (a bit of a rarity in doom metal). It did not prepare me for the brilliant songwriting, and amazing lyrics. It took me just one single spin of the album to love this to bits. Go ahead, and listen to Moonhorse. I picked this one in particular because it also vaguely reminded me of White Rabbit from Jefferson Airplane - and that is a good thing. (Yes, this one is also for you, Mirjam.) If you are scared by the heavy, doomy start and you really want to give up that early already, skip or hold on at least up to the 1:00 mark. Trust me. ...oh, and the lyrics, the lyrics... Here is the first part of it. Oh mother Are there horses on the moon? I saw them last night Through the looking glass tube One horse was red The other was blue Running and rolling Where the moonflowers bloom Oh mother Are there tigers in the sea? Tumbling and swimming Like dolphins, they breathe Happy and graceful At the bottom of the sea Playing like children And they look just like me
