I started the year by going out to lunch with a very dear friend of mine of 40 years ! We went to this little place called BIG WONG in Baani Square Sector 50 Gurgaon. As I entered what really hit me is how small the place is...like a corridor...straight seating but well done in a bit tacky kind of way . But what was really nice was the collage on a wall of record covers of the seventies..there was Pink Floyd Rolling Stones...you get the picture right ?? Forget all this...not important....It was clean..now thats important. There wasnt any stale chinese food rotting smell mixed with vinegar and soy sauce...you know what I mean ? And the three waiters were polite and smiling...thats very important to me. I hate grouchy uninterested and grubby waiters hovering around...it is usually a sign that the food will be the same ! It was nice and cozy and warm since the outside was freezing. The order came in quickly and absolutely piping hot. Extensive menu not very interesting reading so we settled for : MANCHOW SOUP VEG This was as hot as they come in little soup tureens. It was light with lovely thin noodles with a bite to them and some chopped veggies and a hint of ginger garlic . It was lovely. BUTTER GARLIC PRAWNS Utterly butterly delicious. Six good size fresh prawns just sauteed enough to keep them crunchy on the outside and a bit moist inside. Perfectly done STEAMED FISH IN THAI HERBS Simply delicious and delicate to the core. Came in the Bamboo Steamer. Just the right hint of kafir lime lemon grass and galangal salt and a touch of fish oil. This was the stuff cooking dreams are made of . ASSORTED VEGGIES & GREENS This was a winner too. Crunchy snow peas , pak choy , beans, brocolli, capsicum, zucchini tossed over a high flame with the right seasoning. PICKLED VEGETABLES DIM SUMS Four on a plate...beautifully done. See thru thin wrapping and finely chopped veggies in garlic and vinegar and light soy stuffed inside. Served with some sort of dark brown sauce am still trying to figure out what ! Delicious ...and came in hot hot hot ! GARLIC CHILLY HAKKA NOODLES Done very well and deliciously moist too. Not dry and stale. This is a must visit place. The food is exceptional. But what is absolutely mind blowing is the music. Someone has my taste in music there !! From the moment I entered to the minute I left I was singing along the hits of the 60eez/70eez and into the early eighties ! It made eating there a pleasure. So the food was exceptionally good. Please could the waiters use trays for the glasses of nimbu paani and water ? And can we have som more light ? And please please do away with those sunburst mirrors on the wall...they dont add but take away from the lovely collage ! And I wish a chinese restaurant would not be so red...arrey ! use yellow and purple na ! But hello !!! I am nitpicking....2,000 Rs mein aur kya ? Bacchey ki jaan le logey na kya ?? Some of you must be wondering why no chicken ordered ? The best way to gauge the standard of an eating place is ask for the fish...you will know immdtly what the place is like. .... Fish or Prawn not fresh will honk...these were beautiful scrumptious and as fresh as they come. So if any of you want to eat some good fresh wholesome chinese food do go to this lovely place...It is not over the top expensive and the helpings are large enough...three of us ate our fill and came home happy !!
