I thought these two images would be a good start to understanding the importance of lighting patterns and most importantly the direction of light. In the first image you are looking at a stunning profile light. In the 2nd you are looking at a similarly beautiful 2/3 lighting pattern. Now heres the best part in both cases the light and the subject never moved. The only thing that moved during these two images was me. I went from her body and face being in the profile position to seeing a 2/3 view of her face. So lets start with what exactly profile light is. Simply put it is a 2/3 lighting pattern photographed from a profile position. This means that light is wrapping around the face. In order to do this correctly and achieve these results I always look to light into the face thru the body of a female subject. This will be achieved correctly with the female subject in a a correct feminine pose. That means her head tilted to her high front shoulder. If you did nt notice my main light source is the constant tungsten light in the store window. This is my main light and required a tungsten white balance. Because of the light being reflective and not aimed directly at the subject it is soft and allows me to slow my shutter speed. both images were photographed at 1/8 sec at 2.8 ISO 2500. I am using a Nikon #D4S with a 70-200 VR II 2.8 lens. I am maxed out at 200mm on the zoom. I am obviously on a tripod which is an Adorama #3pod tripod. These images were setup and taken within seconds. In both cases the light while in the same spot is at at a 45 degree angle to the subject. in the profile image the light is roughly 45 degrees behind the subject to camera right lighting into the face thru the body and when I moved myself to capture this same image as a frontal view with 2/3 view of the face the light then went from a profile position behind the subject to 45 degrees in front of the subject on camera right. I hope this helps. If you want to see it and leaner how to do it live. We still have very limited seats for some cities on our tour starting next week 6/10 in Atlanta. Only $20 for hours of education. Cant be beat. douggordonworkshops
