I thought this was worth sharing (from a page I follow): Theres been a fair bit of discussion lately about cutting the cord and ditching cable. Ive done plenty of research and math and thought I would share Comcast Cable: $2000 a year (average) Hulu: $96/yr - covers some broadcast TV (NBC, some CBS, ABC, FOX, others) Amazon: $99/yr Netflix: $106/yr Comcast Internet: $480/yr (25 MBps) HBOGo - next year - rumored at $180/yr possibly Tivo Monthly: $15 (new HD DVR for cord cutters) Cord Cutter Total: $1141/yr ($780 without HBO and Tivo) Set up cost: HD Antenna: $150 HD DVR: $199 (Tivo) Roku: $60 - for all the streaming services Startup Total: $400ish - Roku is not 100% necessary as Tivo has several built in apps but Roku has 1000s of channels. Shows youre missing like Walking Dead and other cable stuff? Amazon sells current season shows as does iTunes for $2-$3 an episode. You can watch a ton and still be well below your old comcast bill. Recommend researching cable shows you will want to and see where/when they are available. I have not addressed the issue of land line phone for 911 purposes. This is based on Comcast. This is not perfect but give an idea of what you can do. There are various antennas from $20 to hundreds. They will not all work from all places. Check antennaweb.org for a sense of what you need where you live. I live by Target/Costco and an $80 Clearstream 2 did not work. It might work if I can put it at the tip top of my roof. There are also other solutions for DVRs that do not include monthly fees but are complicated to set up and less reliable than Tivo. ADDED: The biggest loss is live sports. You either need to buy packages or hope for local channel broadcast. You can stream it from a variety of sketchy websites but you really really really have to know what you doing or youll get a load of malware on your computer.
