I use FB for my purposes. This necessarily distinguishes my use as active. While this does not entirely protect me from the effects of exposure and the developmental implications of such exposure, it does repurpose my participation and choices. Dramatically. Which means that my intentions prevail over those implicit in the tool. This is a crucial feature of cognitive and relational activism. Where we become the passive »recipients of a tool... we become »living extensions of the tool’s superficial and actual purposes, hidden and overt intentions, and function. We become subtools of tools. I use FB for »my purposes. Not those of the culture, not those of the newsfeed, and not those of the passive ‘scrapbooker’ whose goals are entirely available and relatively programmable by the medium and its projections. You could »learn to use FB for your purposes. Or, perhaps even more provocatively: We must learn to use all tools »together, with and for »each other and our world. Otherwise: we become extensions of tools. And functions we are not even consciously aware of. In that situation, our awareness will undergo constant attrition, so that we will not only be unaware, but less and less capable of awakening to the cascade of thefts, inhibitions, and outright violations that must then follow as the results of such conversion.
