I want to pass along a tip I read in a fractal postwork tutorial I read. If you do postwork to brighten your fractal, use curves not brightness/contrast or tonemapping. The difference is that using a gentle curve not moving the first or last points in the curve will keep your darkest point and lightest points the same but it will brighten the middle tones. Really helps if you like using dark but colored backgrounds instead of black but works really great with black too. I think it has improved my work so I wanted to pass that along. Curves seems to be the same in Photoshop and PSP. Not sure about Blender and such.
