I want to share a small story regarding my Arabic teacher at the University of Medinah. Once after several days of seeing the Shaykh rubbing and holding his stomach under his desk I asked him "Shaykh are you ok?" He replied, "Subhana Allah, I have an illness in my stomach that gives me pain and causes me to frequent the bathroom (for which he never left class during teaching time)." He went on to say, "Some of the students complain when I do not allow them to use the bathroom, but I am here in pain all day because I want you all to get the most benefit of learning this language and if I am out sick, then you all will lose out as well. So I deal with the pain and sacrifice so that my students can learn." At that moment I felt ashamed as a student of knowledge wondering if I was sacrificing and striving as hard as the one who was there educating me and giving me the tools that I needed while being in pain and refraining from utilizing the bathroom so that we do not lose out on benefiting and getting closer to Allah. A question for us to ask ourselves: "What am I sacrificing for Allah and the Ummah?"
