I wanted to tell you all about a wonderful thing that happened the other day. I was headed to an important meeting with some close friends, and between the many miles we put on their car and the hellish traffic we were running late. So of course, we ran out of gas about a quarter mile or less from the offramp and it was too much of an incline to coast the remaining distance. Craig, always the gentlemen, set off walking and insisted Stella and I wait with the car, safely pulled into a turnout. As we sat there, after he had disappeared in the distance, suddenly a towtruck pulls in front of us. Our first thought was that we were going to be towed because being inoperative on the side of the freeway is a hazard to other drivers, but we were in a turnout by a call box. The young gentlemen came up to the drivers window, Are you ladies alright? We explained we ran out of gas and her husband was being met at the gas station off the next exit. He told us to call and tell him to wait where he was, wed be there shortly. He smiled and said stay put while he gave our car some gas, and we were both staring at each other in shock, peering at the towtruck with its freeway service lettering, and wondering how we rated this angel swooping up to help, this couldnt be real! While Stella called Craig, the young man put a few gallons in our tank, and I slipped a twenty into her hand, hoping it would be enough. When she tried to give it to him, he put up his hands palms out, saying, no, theres no charge. We are part of CA highway patrol, and theres no fee for the service. We take down your plate number, but not to send a bill. If you ever have a situation like this, dial 511 and we respond. LA, Orange, Riverside, and most of the inland empire. My usual paranoia about taking down information didnt even tingle, really, because naturally they have to account for their hours and provisions, and he didnt need to tell us he was taking our plate number or why, but doing so was a kindness to two women in that situation-a stalker wouldnt worry about whether we were concerned. It was so unexpected, so kind, to help us and whether its his job or not, the young man was so polite and reassuring that it really made an impression on myself and Stella. So the next time you wonder where the money you pay for licensing and registering your car goes, I want you to be aware that in Southern CA, part of it goes to pay the wages of angels driving freeway assistance trucks, part of the highway patrol dept. And I think its money well-spent, and thank those responsible for this incredible service!
