I was asked to send this to another caller and thought I would post it here as well. It is a particularly good exercise for those learning sight calling and resolution....EXERCISE - Resolution technique. Method…move your checkers through the following sequences Once the formation is established, use only one resolution technique to resolve each sequence. Note: for instance, if your resolution technique is to use the friends and enemies method as in the material I gave you your would look at the following get it and see several possible get outs • Heads LEAD Right (lead to the right box) Circle to a Line (zero line) Pass the Ocean (parallel waves out of sequence) Looking at this you can see that if I called something like centres trade and swing thru I can then call a right and left grand…. Easy huh…now the hard part….. In this exercise you must ignore all the other get outs and resolve each sequence only using a single resolution technique. If I am using the friends and enemies method (as in the material I sent you) I would have to force myself to resolve this as follows: I remember my resolution technique as follows This Method consists of 5 Steps Step 1 When ready to resolve the square, arrange the square in normal girl on the right boy on the left parallel (right couple facing in) 2-face lines Step 2 Pair up the key man with his partner (Use circulates or trades) and if the key couple is not facing out, call couples circulate. (The end position is a 2-face line with the key couple paired up on the left side of the line facing out) Step 3 Call “bend the line”. (The dancers are now in facing lines with the key man and his partner on the left end of the line) Step 4 Check the friends and enemies. Identify the couple directly across from the key man and his partner. Step 5 Call the appropriate get out resolution. From our get in : Heads Lead Right, Circle to a Line, Pass the Ocean Step 1 make the normal right hand 2 face line – many possible options here but I chose Swing thru, boys trade, boys run (normal 2 face lines) Step 2 …from here I have to get my key couple (couple number 1 for this exercise) on the end of the line facing out. I know by looking at the square that everyone here has their partner and the couples are out of sequence…you can probably see two or three quick get outs from here….again IGNORE THEM AND FOLLOW THE SEQUENCE ONLY. As my key couple is already paired, I ignore everyone else and call couples circulate to get the key couple facing out. Step 3 – call bend the line Again - There are many ways to get to this position and with experience callers often instantly recognise the pairing of key couple on the left of a facing line. This allows you to by-pass steps one and two. However, until you are ready and comfortable, force yourself to use the full 5-step method for confidence build. Step 4 – check the friends or enemies (the couple directly across from your key couple) The next part of step four is to believe that (because it is true) there are only 4 possible combinations opposite the key couple • 2 friends (the other couple you selected at the beginning) • 2 enemies (Neither of the dancers is part of the second selected couple) • Friend Boy/enemy girl (Selected boy but he does not have his partner) • Enemy Boy/Friend girl (Selected girl but does not have her partner) In this case I have 2 enemies (it is neither the corner girl nor her partner (friends)) Step 5 – call the appropriate resolution • 2 friends – slide thru, square thru 3, allemande left • 2 enemies – star thru, pass thru, allemande left • Friend (corner) girl/Enemy boy (not her partner) – pass thru, wheel and deal, centres pass thru, allemande left • Enemy Girl (not the corner)/ Friend boy (not her partner – i.e the original corner man) – pass thru wheel and deal, square thru 3, allemande left. So from here the appropriate resolution I chose would be 2 enemies and I would call star thru, pass thru allemande left. The entire sequence would be Get in: Heads Lead Right, Circle to a Line, Pass the Ocean Resolve: Swing thru, boys trade, boys run, couples circulate, bend the line (identify friends or enemies) Appropriate get out: star thru, pass thru allemande left Although this looks simple, it is a very difficult exercise. The goal is to force yourself to only use this (or your chosen) resolution technique to the exclusion of all others. Force yourself to use it until it is so firmly in your mind, that you will know that no matter where you are in a square, or where the dancers are on the floor, you will always be able to resolve the square. Limit yourself to one option per the four possible combinations of friends and enemies. Once you have this absolutely solid, then choose a second resolution technique and repeat the exercise with that one to the exclusion of all others. You will be amazed at how hard it is not to use things you see jump out at you. Resist the temptation to take the obvious resolution and force yourself to use the technique until it is yours. Finally practice, practice, practice….and more practice. I will post some get ins in a minute for you to work on
