I was recently chatting with a friend who has a 10-month-old baby girl. The discussion led to the joys and travails of being a mommy, one of which was how much raising a child costs these days. I struggle with miscellaneous school fees, and of course, the weekly grocery. Still, I can breathe a sigh of relief that all my boys are well past toddlerhood. She, on the other hand, says a bulk of her expenses goes to buying her baby’s necessities. “I was on medication, so I had to opt for milk formula. A big can goes for P2,000, and it takes her only 1 ½ to 2 weeks to consume it. It’s a good thing that she now eats mashed veggies. Big packs of baby diapers cost more than P500 now,” she groans.
