I was sent this link and asked for an opinion. Here is my opinion: This entire article is shamelessly based on 20/20 hindsight. The cop was responding to a burglary in progress, found a guy in the dimly lit garage holding a shiny metal object that looked like a knife. The suspect was approaching the officer and not following commands to drop the knife (spoon). The cop fired once killing the man. If the cop was responding to a welfare check on a mentally unstable person holding a spoon, I highly doubt the outcome would have been the same. The general public fails to understand, let alone fails to even consider that as cops, we approach a situation not knowing everything going on there, and we can only go on what we are told. Our actions, both legally and rationally, can only be judged on what we knew at the time. Yet the media likes to take information that is discovered further down the road and tries to retroactively insert it into the equation, and then blames the cops for doing something bad based on information they never had. This article is just another fine example of the media crucifying the cops. (BTW, my opinion of The Free Thought Project is that if it were print, it would not be worthy of wiping my butt with it. Every article I have read there reeks of Cop Block like sentiments cloaked in Libertarian guise.) -Matt
