I was tasked by Sheila Buchanan to post 10 books that have stayed - TopicsExpress

I was tasked by Sheila Buchanan to post 10 books that have stayed with me, tag a few friends and pass on the challenge. The real challenge became narrowing it down to 10. These are all books I would gladly re-read and recommend to others. 1) Sometimes a Great Notion by Ken Kesey - This also happens to be on Sheila’s list. It’s one of those books that draws you into the characters’ tales. Set in the Oregon logging industry in the 1960s it’s a saga of conflict with the motto “never give an inch”. 2) She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb – I honestly kept checking the author’s name to confirm that this book was actually written by a man. This comedy/drama about a young woman is wonderfully profound. 3) Not Wanted on the Voyage by Timothy Findlay – What a dark and twisted fairy tale! This fantastic story will have you hating Noah and loving Lucifer. 4) The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls – It’s a testament to the strength of the author that she was able to become the woman that she is considering the selfish, neglectful parents she had. In her memoir I never got the impression that she was angry at her parents. It was just their way of life. 5) Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – Wow!! I don’t want to say too much as this is a book that will take you by surprise. Now they’ve made it into a movie I suggest reading the book first if you can. It’s a page turner so you can get through it quickly. 6) A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton-Porter – I was very young when I read this book but it’s sort of haunted me ever since. The character of Elnora was someone I respected and admired. 7) A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury – This short story really made me think about our actions and how they can impact so many things that we’re not even aware of. 8) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – My mum was always trying to get me to read Austen and I was always resisting. I had this idea that they would be dry and boring. I couldn’t have been more wrong and once I started I read through a few of her books. Her wit and views of society are very amusing and accurate. 9) Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams – Sometimes you just want a good laugh and this book had me laughing out loud many times. At times it’ll have you scratching your head and then it makes you go “Aha!” 10) The Bees by Laline Paull – I’m actually reading this book right now but I can already tell it’s going to be a story that will stick with me and one I’ll recommend to many. I have so many partially read books right now and was really looking for one that would draw me in and keep me turning the page instead of getting easily distracted. This tale of Flora 717, a sanitation worker in her hive, is so beautifully told I can almost smell the honey and feel the aura of the Queen Mother around me. Thanks Wade for suggesting it. So now I ask these five to please do the same - take your time. :) Wade Metz, Gina Leola Woolsey, Louise Prosser, Ethel Humphreys, Theresa Louise and anyone else whod like to share some good reading!
