I was thinking on this earlier, and I thought Id post it here for discussion. As the case with many games, physical copies become somewhat irrelevant once you reach the technological stage where you can fit a bajillion ROMs on a $10 microSD, or you make use of an online service such as PSN or XBL that offer free games to subscribers- to date, Ive found that it only takes the initial download to secure the free copy.. fairly sure you can download it once, delete it, and come back to it later to re-download to your account if need be. Which leads me to an interesting question; for a collector of games, who likes to PLAY those games, how does a 15-day Free offering influence the overall value of the game in your collection? I happen to own a copy of SSX that I bought soon after the game was released, and it sat on my shelf for the majority of the time since then.. but it was XBLs Games with Gold selection recently for 360 owners, meaning I could just directly download it to my ever-dwindling free space on my HD and continue to let the physical copy collect dust. Now, I havent seen Microsoft go out of their way to publish really rare or uncommon games to the Freebie list as yet, but Ive had a few thatd run me an easy $20 at the store locally come into my collection (well, that and those end-of-year sales.. $5 for some of these games is JUST RIGHT) But a digital copy retains no real value- but can it influence the value of the real thing? Does a temporary elimination of bar-to-entry diminish the value of the physical game, and does that value remain diminished after the digital doorway closes at that price point? Perhaps not as classic as an NES collection (where you can get the bajillion roms on your smartphone, these days) but an interesting segment in the market as a whole that Id love to get some input on.
