I went to see 12 Years a Slave this morning. If anybody asks you why youre upset about that guy with the confederate flag standing in front of our White House, tell them to go see the movie. If anybody asks you why so many black folks are so angry, tell them to go see the movie. If anybody asks you why it is so hard for this country to figure out how to talk about slavery, tell them to go see the movie. If anybody asks you why black women get mad when white women cry in the middle of discussions of racism, tell them to go see the movie. If anybody asks you why some people feel so free to disrespect our president, tell them to go see the movie. If anybody asks you anything at all about race in America, tell them to go see the movie. It is two hours of relentless, horrifying pictures of what American slavery looked like and felt like and was, and while you cant help but be relieved when Solomon is finally rescued and returns to his family, you cant even be a little bit happy because you know all those other black human beings -- our families, our ancestors, our beloveds--were still there on the plantations where he was tormented for 12 years, except nobody was coming to rescue them.
