I will never for the life of me understand why so many people have some kind of condescending animosity towards the poor. Have you ever been poor? Not broke, but POOR. There is a difference. Most welfare recipients have one full-time, if not multiple, jobs. Did you know that being a full-time student does not count as employment in the welfare-to -work program? Therefore, one who is trying desperately to pull himself up by the bootstraps is forced to juggle a full-time job and school. Im not saying that it cant be done, but I will say part of the reason I graduated Magna cum Laude is because I was privileged to have been offered a full scholarship. I took the FREE tuition, FREE housing, FREE books, and FREE food for granted. Furthermore, I continue to have an established middle class family to lean on in the event of monetary need. You cannot expect a person who struggles to find their next meal on a daily basis to be able to fully concentrate on their studies. Most of these students were ill-prepared for college anyway because of Bushs failed No Child Left Behind initiative. You may have been broke, but if you have the ability to read my Facebook status, statistical chances are you have never been POOR. Otherwise, you would know broke-ness and poverty are far from one and the same. Try making a HEALTHY meal out of $1.40. Unless youre growing the food yourself, its virtually impossible. Have your opinions about welfare. All Im saying is TRY (as difficult as it seems to be in 2013) to exercise some level of empathy when you think about snatching the food, housing, and healthcare of your fellow countrymen, women, and children.
