I will never forget the first time i went to the public library - TopicsExpress

I will never forget the first time i went to the public library alone after I basically knew how to read. I was in the second grade and my mother was quite ill with Pluersy. She sent me to the library with a note for the Librarian. The librarian muttered who does she think i am?, her servant?, then waved me away from the front desk. I wandered, and wandered the aisles, then returned to the front desk, and the librarian asked me if i had a library card. i told her no. So she made one for me and then gave me the list my mother had sent me with, and said find everything on the list!. I found a couple of the books listed, and brought them to the front desk, and then the librarian said but you havent chosen anything for you. I felt wild inside and raced away, hearing her say there is NO running allowed. I had already found the treasure and sedately returned to the front desk. The librarian sternly warned me to return the books by the date stamped inside the front cover, or else i would owe a fine. she checked all the books out on my card, even though i had my mothers card. she said only my mother could use her card. i did not dare tell my mother i had my own library card. she would have been furious. Instead, i took all the books back, even those she had not read, and when she got mad i told her i did not want her to pay any late fines. I was 12 years old before my mother realized i had my own library card. and she found out only because a new assistant librarian asked her to inform me a book i had requested, was waiting for me. When my mother returned home, she asked me if, over the last 5 years, i had used her library card to check out books for her. I was terrified and wanted to lie but knew the library had a record,so i told the truth. she then asked me what book had i requested at the library, and i told her; William S. A midsummers night dream. She paled, then shook herself, and walked away.
