I wish there were there were some to dispel two misconceptions - TopicsExpress

I wish there were there were some to dispel two misconceptions about prayer. I wish people would stop saying there is a war on Christians or that there is a war on non-believers. This serves no good purpose. This morning in the Tennessean the heading read “ACLU asks Tennessee schools to stop praying before football games.” The reference is to the practice of some person using the school public address system to voice something that essentially is composed by the speaker sanctioned by someone within the school district. Schools don’t pray; people pray. Many people think of this practice as “talking to God” when in fact it is being broadcast to all who attend the game. God does not need a public address system to hear a prayer. Nobody connected with the ACLU wants people to stop praying before a football game or any time. The content of the story in Tennessean actually read “The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee sent letters this week to several local school superintendents calling on them to stop school-sponsored prayer before football games.” Religious freedom in America is guaranteed in the First Amendment. Please do not stop praying before football games. It is just more polite if you direct your thoughts to God without sharing those thoughts with persons sitting next to you whose freedom includes not being subjected to sectarian speech sponsored by any government entity. Keep praying. God loves to hear you pray; just not so loud and maybe in your own words, not those of some person designated by the athletic director or school principal.
