I wish this were true! But, unfortunately, in all due respect to the Dalai Lama, I don’t think it’s that simple. It’s a little like those who maintain that if we just take violent video games and movies out of circulation this would end violence. I think there are many factors that make for a violent world (e.g., fear, poverty, scarcity, ignorance, will to power). And if you’re going to talk about focusing the solution with our children, then you have to be willing, besides teaching “meditation,” to also undertake serious reform of our public school system, which is ranked quite low in the world. And let’s say that you got a good majority of children into a mediation program and it improved their personal development, their personal lives, and their interpersonal relationships. The problem is you’d still have to find a way to translate this into the larger world of our social and political institutions, not to mention our overall governmental system. Just sayin’ “violence” is a complicated issue that needs to be addressed on many fronts.
