I would like to discuss an issue that the Take Back our Town of Saugus group seems to be confusing with there many posts. They appear to be confusing two separate issues regarding Sewers. One is the issue of the pumps at Bristol and Floyd. At the Town Mtg the other night they were discussing money for an evaluation of the two areas. This has been a concern for at least 6 years. This is not a new issue. Peter Maniogan presented a resolution to fund this report (Selectmen are Sewage officers and were bypassed on this resolution). The resolution was passed. This is a good thing because Floyd is the one most likely to fail. As Brandon ORegan explained at the Selectmen Mtg this needs to be done so they can decide to fix or rebuild. He also apologized for not bringing this to the selectmen first. It really should have been Peter Maniogan to apologize for not going to selectmen first. The Bristol St playground cannot go ahead without knowing whether these pumps need to be moved. The second issue is regarding the Outside Grease Traps for restrauants. The by-laws regarding Outside Grease traps are decades outdated and can cost $1,000s of dollars because of possible blasting and at times not enough land adjacent to the business. This has been an issue for quite a while as well. The previous board of selectmen issued waivers allowing grease to enter our system. A consent order was issued from Dept. of Environmental Protection not to discharge into the system. The present Board of Selectmen has not passed any waivers but have been trying to come up with another more efficient technology. Unfortunately, Scott Crabtree was uncooperative and stalled the process. The Grease trap ordinance awaits information from the Board of Health. They have recommended that an individual be hired to do the inspections of all grease traps. The selectmen are waiting for a job description to be written for this employee of the health dept. to enforce the ordinance. They also need salary recommendations before going forward. It then goes to the town Manager to figure out funding for this new position. I am sure the TM Palleschi will be working on it as soon as he has all the info. In summary: *No waivers granted by the present Board of Selectmen. *Previous Board of Selectmen granted waivers. *Present Board of Selectmen are looking for a New more efficient system. *New position to oversee ordinance has been suggested by the Board of Health and requires more information from them. *The pumping stations waiting on a report in order to proceed.
