I would like to share some information about pain. As a Manual Therapist I see a lot of people in pain. I believe that pain education is very important. Its important because there are good ways and bad ways to cope with pain. If a person in pain had the wrong information about pain and cope badly with it, the risk that the pain will become chronic is higher. First you need to know the definition of pain. The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defines pain as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage Let me emphasize the emotional part of pain and that pain is also associated with POTENTIAL tissue damage. Because of previous experiences people react differently to pain and pain does not mean that there is damage. Below here are some facts about pain I copied from someone who calls himself Specialist Pain Physio. I copied them, because I could not put them in a better way. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Pain is not a structure -- e.g./ you cant blame a disc, a joint etc. Pain is a response. 2. Pain can be highly suggestible. 3. Whilst we cannot feel someone elses pain, we can empathise; e.g./ watching someone else suffer triggers both emotional and physical responses in ourselves (the two are not exclusive). 4. Pain does not give an accurate picture of what is going on in the tissues. 5. Pain is influenced by where our attention lies. 6. Pain involves the whole person, the context of life at the moment pain is experienced and the environment in which it is happening. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are interested to learn more, look at the you tube video from Lorimer Mosely. Lorimer Mosely is a Professor of Clinical Neurosciences and Chair in Physiotherapy and does a lot of pain research. He is very good in explaining very complicated information in a funny and simple way that, I think, everybody can understand.
