I wrote the following in response to a buddy venting about the Alex Rodriguez scandal. The last REAL sports heroes are retired (Michael Jordan, Cal Ripken Jr., Troy Aikman) or have passed away (Walter Payton, Reggie White, Johnny Unitas). Almost everybody else has at least some trash baggage attached to them (Tiger Woods, Barry Bonds, Michael Phelps). We watch the current contenders with fearful hope that they will make it one more magical season without throwing their careers into the toilet of scandals. Some get completely flushed (OJ), while others stay floating for what seems like forever (Mike Tyson, Dennis Rodman, Lance Armstrong, and maybe soon to be Alex Rodriguez). Even if you keep yourself clean, most athletes know not to commit the ultimate sin and profess your faith in Christ. Any other theology is safe except the one in which this country was founded. What a messed up, rotten, backwards world our kids have inherited. Only by the grace of God will they prevail.
