IIM-Udaipur starts deferred placement to encourage entrepreneurship JAIPUR: Following the footsteps of IITs, the Indian Institute of Management-Udaipur has introduced deferred placements aiming to promote entrepreneurship among its students. Deferred placements means students who are keen on start-ups can jump the placements sessions for two years even after they pass out from the institute. The IIM is providing a monthly stipend of Rs 20,000 to each student who are opting for deferred placement on a condition they are working on a business model. They institute will make a quarterly assessment of the project and the continuity of the project is dependent on the satisfactory performance of the students. Edmin James, a student member of placement cell, said, This is unique scheme allows a student to opt for his or her dream project with bare minimum risk. If the project fails, the student can join campus placements sessions within two years. Mrithyunjai Yadav of 2014 batch from IIM-U kept out offers to start a food processing unit based on nutrition. He is among the five students who opted for deferred placements. Though I have never thought of going back to the placement via my institute as my scheme has become financially supportive, the new scheme assures of a back-up plan in case of any failure in my start-up, Yadav said. James added that the institute which has a wide network in the country is also helping budding entrepreneurs while providing them mentoring. The IIM-U has also decided to help other institutes in the state for developing incubation centres for entrepreneurship. The advantage of sitting in the campus placements are many as different companies visit to recruit students, thereby increasing the chances of getting jobs for the students.
