INVITATION to Meeting of Remembrance of Victims of Civil War in Ukraine and Aspiration for Peace Sunday, September 14, 11:30AM - 1:30pm Parliament Hill On April 14, 2014 the National Council of Security and Defense of Ukraine launched a large-scale anti-terrorist operation (ATO) against “pro-Russian terrorists” in Donetsk and Luhansk regions (South-East of Ukraine). The government in Kyiv refused to hear Ukrainians who asked more economical and political autonomy from the centre, a right to function and to educate people in the language of the majority of the population in the region, a freedom to venerate their own heroes and their own history. The government in Kyiv chose military force over negotiation. For 5 months now Ukraine has been torn by war that takes away human lives on both sides of the conflict and deepens every day a profound cleavage between Ukrainians who have a different vision of their country’s past and future. Ukrainian army bombs schools, hospitals, homes. According to the OSCE, over 2600 civilians were killed in Ukraine since the beginning of the ATO, 800 of these victims being children. About one million Ukrainian had to flee their homes, finding shelter in Russia. A humanitarian crisis strikes Luhansk – people are left without power, water, food; there are no medications. We want to remember civilians and journalists who were killed during this civil war. We want to tell the stories of ordinary people in Donbass who have been living in despair and fear. We want to express our strongest support for the peace talks and first signs of fragile truce in Ukraine. We want to call upon the Canadian government to stop supporting the war in Ukraine. Canada should encourage a national dialogue within Ukraine and help the government in Kyiv to build a democratic, inclusive Ukraine that would respect the plurality of political opinions and diversity of cultures. Join your voice to ours! Come and say “NO” to war and “YES” to peace
