IS THIS ANOTHER ROYAL MINT RIP OFF? The Royal Mint issue their first £20 silver coin today but experts at CoinCraft says its only worth £8 and is unlikely to gain any value. Unfortunately we see a lot of customers who have purchased limited edition, special issue and commemorative coins from various sources that are worth a great deal less than what was paid for them. Most recently someone contacted us who paid £11,000 for a coin made by Pobjoy Mint that has an intrinsic value of a few hundred pounds! The Ascenion Islands Queens Diamond Jubilee coin made of 60 ounces of silver with 60 diamonds, 1 carat total weight, is still being offered for sale by several firms for £9,500 but our customer cannot find anyone who will pay him £1000 for his coin including these retailers. Please do your research before purchasing these types of coins, they may not be a good investment, however, if you get pleasure from this type of numismatics and return on investment is not an issue then it can be an interesting way of collecting coins. Nevertheless, we would encourage you look for good quality historical coins and try to purchase them from a reputable auction house or coin dealer. Find out if they are BNTA members (British Numismatic Trade Association).
