ISNT LAKE ONTARIO AWESOME ? From the Toronto downtown apartment on the 18th floor where we (my wife and I) are staying with our sons/daughter-in-law/grand-daughter, Lake Ontario presents a beautiful outlook. It is so vast that it looks like a sea, and as it changes its colors with weather conditions - especially during dawn - the outlook is breathtakingly beautiful. After some stretch of the lake, there is an island, beyond which is the vaster expanse of clear, blue water extending right up to New York in the US. Very late in the night or considerably before dawn, on a clear day, you can actually see some lights at that far end. Close to our high-rise condo (near the two similar buildings in the first pic which gives a view from CN Tower and is taken from the net), we see all 3 modes of transport - land, water and air - unusually close to one another : A busy thoroughfare with flyovers for cars, a harbour with ships, and a domestic airport where planes keep landing and taking off all day long. The runway is right on the shore, and a building across the road hides the confluence, so as an aircraft swoops down to land from our left, over the lake, it looks like about to land on water ! Lake Ontario (French: Lac Ontario) is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It has on the north and southwest the Canadian province of Ontario, and on the south and east, the American state of New York. Ontario, Canadas most populous province, was named after the lake. In the Wyandot (Huron) language, Ontarío means “Lake of Shining Waters”. It is the last in the Great Lakes chain and serves as the outlet to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence River. When its islands are included, the lake has a shoreline that is 1,146 km long. Its maximum length is 311 km., and its maximum width is 85 km. The lakes average depth is 283 ft with a maximum depth of 802 ft. The lakes primary source is the Niagara River, with the St. Lawrence River serving as the outlet.
