Faces are unseen, or details impossible to see clearly. They are people masked by scratchy surfaces and some by the clothing they wear. Anonymous, mysterious, isolated and alone. Although there is a feeling of melancholia projected from the images, the viewer is drawn back to the figures with a feeling of empathy and nurture. There remains hope, when the figures themselves appear without it. Isolations was created by the artist over the past five years. Knight is personally preoccupied by a range of compelling social issues – immigration, social dislocation and the loss of the traditional community, are amongst them and underpins this series. While these photographs have been drawn from different studies, they share a common sense of melancholia and a distinct visual simplicity. In each case, the technical approach has been carefully established by the photographer using plain monochromatic backgrounds and simple lighting. Within this restrained framework, each subject is given time and space to reveal its own meaning. The result is a collection of unflinching, haunting images. ABOUT ARTIST cargocollective/knight-photo David Knight is a professional photographer with over 20 years experience in Australia, the UK and Middle East. Born in the UK, Knight began studying Fine Arts at North Oxfordshire College. It wasn’t long before he decided to pursue photography instead, completing his studies at Cheltenham and Gloucester College. Commencing his career in London, Knight then moved to Dubai in 1995. Over the next four years projects took him right across the United Arab Emirates and to Yemen, Oman, Kuwait, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Relocating to Australia in late 1998, Knight continued to establish himself as a sought after photographer with a passion of portraiture and a keen eye for detail. In addition to being shown in solo and group exhibitions, Knight’s work has appeared in the ABC’s ‘Sunday Art’ Program, The Sydney Morning Herald and Sunday Times (England). He has been featured in Australian Capture Magazine, Pro Photo Magazine and Creative Magazine.
